What To Do When You Feel Overwhelmed

January 21, 2019 by admin

Everyone is busy, and that can be a good thing or a bad one depending on your own personality and what you want from life. For some, the busier they get the happier they are, always able to have something to do and something to focus on. For others, having more and more to do leave them feel overwhelmed and unable to be productive at all. If you fall into the latter category, read on to discover some useful tips to help you when you’re feeling like everything is getting too much.

Don’t Self-Medicate

The last thing you should do when you are feeling overwhelmed is to self-medicate. Taking drugs, drinking, or taking pills may make you feel less burdened for a short time, but in the long term it will make things worse, costing you your health, your family, your job, and, of course, money.

If you are worried that you have tried self-medication and now have a problem with addiction, this rehab facility can help you get back on track.

Take A Time Out

When you begin to feel overwhelmed and you know you’re not being as productive as you had been, you should take a time out. Step completely away from whatever it is you are doing, and forget about it for a while. This may at first be easier said than done, but once you try it, you’ll see that it works. Read a book, watch TV, go for a run, prepare dinner early, or anything else that takes you mind of the task that was causing you to feel bad.

When you go back to what you were doing, you should feel more at ease and calmer, and you’ll be able to look at the problem with fresh eyes.

Be Thankful

Another way to deal with overwhelm is to flip it and think about why you are so busy and then be grateful for those things. You might be constantly ferrying children to different clubs and activities; you can be thankful for a loving family, or for a vehicle and being able to drive it. Perhaps work is becoming much busier; be thankful for having a job, or for being well thought of by your boss who knows you can do the tasks he or she is asking of you.

Being thankful will help to remove the initial feeling of overwhelm, but it won’t solve the problem long term. However, once you are feeling better, you can then look at what changes you need to make to ensure you don’t constantly become overwhelmed in life or at work.

Talk To Someone

Keeping your thoughts and feelings all bottled up inside is a bad idea. For one thing, you won’t ever get anything solved because no one will know how you are feeling or that there is a problem. For another, you could make yourself sick mentally and physically by just carrying on as though nothing is the matter. Talking to someone is a great way of unburdening yourself, and you might even be able to come up with a solution to help you change the way you are feeling, or the things you are doing. You can speak to a professional therapist, or a loved one or friend, depending on how you are feeling.
